Fruit-bearing trees are one of the biggest draws for bears into Canmore neighbourhoods. A single productive apple or mountain ash can pull a bear off the trails and into a yard, which is dangerous for the bear and for everyone nearby. To reduce that conflict, the Town of Canmore reimburses residents for removing fruit-bearing trees.
How much can you claim?
The program reimburses up to $500 for residential properties and up to $1,000 for commercial properties toward the removal of fruit-bearing trees. Amounts and eligibility can change year to year, so it is worth confirming the current terms before you book work.
Who and what qualifies?
- Fruit-bearing trees that attract wildlife, such as apple, crabapple, cherry, plum and mountain ash.
- Properties within the Town of Canmore.
- Removal carried out to the Town's requirements, with documentation.
How the process works
- 01Confirm the tree is an eligible fruit-bearing species and that current program terms apply.
- 02Have the tree removed by an insured, qualified contractor.
- 03Submit the removal documentation to claim the reimbursement.
If you have a fruit tree pulling wildlife into your yard, removing it protects your family and the bears at the same time, and the Town helps cover the cost. Send us a photo and your address and we will tell you whether it qualifies.
